If a pearl necklace is not knotted, the rubbing will eventually damage the pearls and there is a higher chance it will break. Also, knotting prevents pearls from falling off the strand if it breaks. I use a sterling silver lobster clasp, which, in my experience, is one of the most durable types of clasps.

Please keep in mind that all real pearl necklaces need to be restrung from time to time. However, if you take good care of your pearl necklace, you will not have to worry about it for 5-6 years. Knotted to prevent damage to pearls.
